Glossary of Key Concepts

Quantum Entanglement
When two particles become linked so that measuring one instantly affects the other, regardless of distance. Einstein called it "spooky action at a distance." It has been experimentally confirmed and challenges our intuitions about locality and separability.
The Hard Problem of Consciousness
Philosopher David Chalmers' term for why and how physical processes in the brain give rise to subjective experience. Why is there something it is like to be you? This remains unsolved and is considered by many the deepest problem in all of science.
Non-duality (Advaita)
The philosophical position, central to Advaita Vedanta, that reality is fundamentally one — the separation between self and world, observer and observed, is a conceptual overlay rather than an ultimate truth.
Wave Function Collapse
In quantum mechanics, a particle exists in a superposition of all possible states until measured. Observation causes the wave function to "collapse" to a single definite state. Why this happens remains one of the deepest mysteries in physics.
Panpsychism
The philosophical view that consciousness or mind is a fundamental and ubiquitous feature of reality — not something that emerges only in complex brains, but present at some level in all matter.
The Simulation Hypothesis
The idea, popularised by philosopher Nick Bostrom, that our perceived reality may be a computational simulation run by a more advanced civilisation. Taken seriously by physicists like James Gates who found error-correcting code in string theory equations.
Many-Worlds Interpretation
An interpretation of quantum mechanics proposed by Hugh Everett III, suggesting that all possible outcomes of a quantum measurement actually occur — each in a separate, branching universe. There is no collapse; only splitting.
Dark Energy
A mysterious force that is causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate. It constitutes roughly 68% of the total energy content of the universe, yet remains entirely unexplained. Its nature is one of the greatest open questions in cosmology.
The Holographic Principle
A property of quantum gravity theories suggesting that the description of a volume of space can be encoded on its boundary — like a 2D surface containing all information about a 3D volume. Proposed by Gerard 't Hooft and Leonard Susskind.
Integrated Information Theory (IIT)
A theory of consciousness proposed by neuroscientist Giulio Tononi, which holds that consciousness corresponds to the amount of integrated information (phi, Φ) in a system. Higher phi means more consciousness — with implications for AI and even basic matter.
The Anthropic Principle
The observation that the universe's fundamental constants are fine-tuned to permit the existence of observers. Either this is a cosmic coincidence, evidence of design, or the result of a vast multiverse in which all possible constants are realised.
Free Will
The capacity to make choices that are not determined by prior causes. In light of neuroscience (which shows decisions precede conscious awareness) and physics (determinism or quantum randomness), whether genuine free will exists is deeply contested.
Zero-Point Energy
The lowest possible energy a quantum mechanical system can have — not zero, but a baseline of quantum fluctuation. Even in a vacuum, space is not empty but seething with these fluctuations, which have observable physical effects (Casimir effect).
Synchronicity
Carl Jung's term for meaningful coincidences that cannot be explained by cause and effect — events that are connected by meaning rather than causation. Jung believed it pointed to an underlying unity between psyche and matter.
The Observer Effect
In quantum mechanics, the act of observing a system necessarily disturbs it. More broadly, it raises the philosophical question of whether reality has definite properties before being observed, or whether observation plays a role in constituting what is real.
